The Cat with a Heart of Gold

Meet Rademenes, the famous black cat who is widely known as the "Nurse Cat" for his heartwarming habit of comforting and cuddling sick and recovering animals at his local veterinary clinic and shelter.

When he was brought to the vet hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Rademenes was a very sick kitten himself. He had a severe respiratory infection and the fight for his life was on. The shelter staff and the veterinarian who treated him considered ethical euthanasia as they watched his condition deteriorate but then, just as this option was being seriously discussed, he started to purr and that changed everything. The clinic staff decided he deserved a second chance and to everyone’s surprise, after a few weeks of around-the-clock care, he made a miraculous recovery. He had not given up and neither had they.

As soon as he was well again, the shelter staff noticed something remarkable. The partially paralyzed little black kitten who had recently been so sick had begun to comfort other animals recovering from surgery or suffering from severe illnesses.

Rademenes gave hugs and cuddles, warmed up recovering patients, and even licked their ears and faces to comfort and help heal them. He seemed to have the uncanny ability to sense when other animals needed care, and he offered “his services” to any animal in need, showing the same affection to dogs as he did to other felines. The shelter staff jokingly referred to him as their "full-time nurse," and many veterinarians working there noted that animals seemed to recover much faster when he was around.

Enjoying His Golden Years

The name Rademenes comes from a famous 1984 Polish TV series called "Siedem życzeń" ("Seven Wishes"). In the show, a 13-year-old boy rescues a black cat from a group of bullies. The cat turns out to be magical, capable of human speech, and grants the boy seven wishes. So Rademenes seemed like the perfect name for this very special little black cat.

It would be hard to count how many animals Rademenes has helped through the years. When against all odds he survived a life-threatening illness, he seemed to know instinctively that he had an important purpose in life. And he’s used his second chance to bring happiness and healing to others.

About 12 years old now, and after many years of service, Rademenes has retired to a quieter life. He still visits sick and recovering patients but is no longer featured in daily social media posts, which allows him to age comfortably away from public attention.

Of course, he remains a permanent resident under the dedicated lifelong care of veterinarian Lucyna Kuziel-Zawalich and the shelter staff who originally saved him. Global animal advocacy pages and social media communities like Cole & Marmalade continue to share his legacy to inspire animal rescue efforts worldwide. And his selfless acts of kindness have brought a smile to people’s faces around the world.
