Ghost Dog Wanders the Streets for Years Unnoticed, By Mary Schwager

Zubin abandoned and alone

For years, a dog named Zubin roamed the streets of the Colony Ridge community in Cleveland, Texas. Despite his heartbreaking condition, he seemed to be invisible to those around him. He was slowly disappearing: his hair, his emaciated body, even his will to live.

Zubin was one of the many strays of Colony Ridge, a neighborhood about an hour northeast of Houston, notorious for its high number of abandoned and neglected dogs. Two local women, Zully Vasquez Ventura and Jenny Rodriguez, who run a nonprofit that helps feed the dogs and network with rescues, saw Zubin and finally stopped. The rescuers shared Zubin's story on social media, calling him a "ghost with no name," and prayed someone would see the posts and step in to help. They knew that Zubin's health was deteriorating after so much neglect, and he would need special care to survive.

The Rescue Begins

It didn't take long for Amanda Houghton in Austin to spot Zubin in her social feed and stop scrolling. “I couldn't look away,” Houghton told The Dodo. She contacted a nonprofit group she volunteers for, Jack Jack’s Pack Street Dog Rescue, and offered to foster Zubin for the organization. “Without hesitation, they said yes,” Houghton said.

Houghton hung up the phone, jumped in the car and raced to pick up Zubin. “I just wanted to get him to safety as soon as possible ─ that was the goal,” Houghton said. “But when I first saw him, my thought was like, ‘I don't know if he's even going to make it through the night.’”

Their first stop was the animal hospital. “I've never fostered a dog in as bad a shape as he was,” Houghton said. “He was just a skeleton. The vet called him a fossil and said he had the worst case of mange they’d ever seen.”

Months of Rehabilitation and Love

Zubin looks like a completely different dog.

Zubin was suffering from sarcoptic mange, which is highly contagious and caused by microscopic mites. The frail pup would need regular medicated baths to get rid of it.

When Houghton heard the news, she was unfazed. One bath at a time, along with nutritious food, ongoing medical care and love, Zubin began his remarkable transformation. He weighed about 60 pounds when Houghton picked him up in October, and now he’s nearly 90 pounds (his ideal weight is likely around 110 pounds).

Houghton also ran a DNA test on Zubin, which revealed that he's a mix of Anatolian shepherd and Great Pyrenees mix. So he’s meant to be a big, goofy boy. His personality is starting to shine, and he's learning about toys, getting used to sleeping on the couch, and even playing with other dogs. After months of rehabilitation and care, Zubin is finally ready to find his forever home through Jack Jack’s Pack Street Dog Rescue.

“He’s made such strides, and he's incredibly gentle,” Houghton said. “He's never had an ounce of aggression. He loves to cuddle. He plays well with everyone.”

A Truly Inspiring Story

Zubin makes a remarkable recovery.

Turns out this “ghost dog” who wandered the streets alone, abandoned and forgotten, was a diamond patiently waiting to be discovered. He just needed a chance, and now his gentle and loving nature is shining through.

“To see him bounce back as much as he has, to assimilate into our home and be a loving dog despite everything he's been through, it's nothing short of amazing,” Houghton said.
