This spring, a sweet four-month-old Golden Retriever named Copper arrived at Angels Camp Veterinary Hospital under heartbreaking circumstances. Surrendered by his previous owner, Copper was visibly unwell ─ his belly was distended, he was experiencing abdominal pain, running a fever, and struggling to breathe. It was immediately clear: this little pup needed urgent help.
Under the care of Dr. Heermance and the Angels Camp team, Copper underwent multiple tests to determine the cause of his rapid decline. His condition continued to worsen, and he needed blood transfusions to stabilize him. After extensive diagnostics, it was determined that he had a congenital liver shunt ─ a rare and serious condition where the blood bypasses the liver, preventing it from filtering toxins properly. With this diagnosis, Copper’s chances would be grim without surgery.
Experts Step in to Help
Liver shunt surgery is highly specialized and typically only performed by board-certified surgeons in specialized environments. Fortunately, Copper could be referred to the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, where he was scheduled for surgery on July 29, 2025. This referral was made possible after Dr. Heermance consulted with NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue, whose financial support combined with the expertise of Dr. William Culp and the UC Davis team to get Copper the life-saving surgery that he needed. The stakes were high, but Copper showed us all that he was ready for the fight, coming through this very delicate procedure like a champ.
Living the Good Life

Today, Copper is back home and thriving. His energy levels have soared, his growth is right on track, and his zest for life is contagious. He’s a whole new pup, finally able to enjoy his puppyhood the way every Golden Retriever should ─ stealing socks and rugs, wagging his tail, and winning hearts and minds wherever he goes.
A heartfelt “thank you” goes to NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue, who helped make this special veterinary intervention possible, giving this sweet dog a future filled with love, play, and golden days ahead.
